In their 2024 review article “RNA granules in flux: dynamics to balance physiology and pathology” (Nature Reviews Neuroscience), Michael Kiebler and Karl Bauer (Kiebler Lab) describe the dynamic nature of RNA granules—membrane-less cellular structures composed of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and RNA-binding proteins. These granules regulate the mRNA life cycle and control when and where proteins are produced in neurons.
The authors explain that RNA granules form through liquid–liquid phase separation and are modulated by neuronal activity. This regulation plays a key role in synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. A deeper understanding of these processes may offer new insights into neurological diseases.
